02 · How A Song Works ★ 本页核心02 · How A Song Works ★ The Core of This Page

Understanding a Song: Three Floors

A swing tune isn't one blob of sound—it's three nested layers: "building blocks → loops → map." Climb all three floors and you can break down any song: how many sections it has, what each section is doing, and what you should be doing.

Building Blocks: Beat → 8 → Phrase

舞者不数小节,数「Swing music is almost always in 4/4 time. : one 8 = 2 measures, the basic punctuation unit for your body.

Resolution · Move-Change Window

How to hear a phrase ending:鼓过门(咚哒哒哒)、管乐齐奏上行、和声有「回家」的落地感。句尾就是你的a drum fill (boom da-da-da), a rising horn ensemble line, or a harmonic sense of landing "back home." The phrase ending is your换招窗口move-change window——招式落在乐句上,比落在任何一个 8 上都高级。—landing a move on the phrase is classier than landing it on any single 8.

It doesn't matter whether a move is 6 counts or 8 counts, and it doesn't matter if you drift out of sync with the "8." Your anchor isn't the 8—it's the phrase.

The Cycle: One Song = the Same "Loop" Repeated N Times

Jazz's secret: the whole song is actually the same harmonic cycle (the chorus, or "loop") repeated over and over. The theme takes one loop, and each solo takes one to several loops. You only need to recognize two kinds of loops to cover ninety percent of the songs on this playlist.

8Loop A: The 12-Bar Blues = 6 Eights

The phrasing works like an argument—or like sweet talk:说一句 → 换个说法再说一遍 → 给出答案Say something → say it again a different way → deliver the answer

The melody says something similar twice, and the third line wraps it up and lands.用法:How to use it:第 5–6 个 8 是「答」,天然适合收势动作——转圈收住、break 定格、pose。The 5th–6th eights are the "answer"—naturally suited to closing moves: finish a turn, freeze on a break, hit a pose.

8Loop B: 32-Bar AABA = 16 Eights

流行歌曲式:The pop-song form:家 A → 家 A → 出门 B(桥段)→ 回家 AHome A → Home A → Going out B (the bridge) → Back home A,每段 4 个 8。, with 4 eights per section.

4 eights · Home

4 eights · Back home

识别法:How to spot it:第三段(B 段)和声与情绪明显「换了个地方」。In the third section (the B section), the harmony and mood clearly "go somewhere else."用法:How to use it:A 段用你的打底循环;B 段换风格(比如从 swingout 切 4 个 8 的 Charleston);回 A 就回到熟悉循环——音乐回家,你也回家。Use your go-to base loop on the A sections; switch styles on the B section (say, from swingouts to 4 eights of Charleston); when the A returns, go back to your familiar loop—the music comes home, and so do you.
Example tracks in this playlist:#16 Flying Home · #18 Sometimes I'm Happy · #34 Don't Be That Way · #35 Jive at Five

When leading, you don't need to know which bar you're on—only where you are in the loop: start new moves at the top of the loop, wind down at the end, switch styles on the B section.

The Map: How Loops Are Arranged into a Complete Song

Answering "how many parts does a song actually have": the vast majority of swing tunes consist of the five sections below, plus three components.

前奏Intro
ShoutShout Chorus
结尾Ending
定速Set the tempo打底Lay the foundation跟乐器换质地Change texture with the instruments放大招Unleash your big movespose
① 前奏 Intro(约 1–4 个 8)① Intro (about 1–4 eights)

The band clears its throat.你该做的:What you should do:数拍定速、选舞种、牵手就位。 Count the beat to gauge the tempo, choose your dance style, take hands and get into position. Ease in with a pulse or basics in place—don't jump the gun; a quiet start looks the coolest.

② 主题 Head(旋律登场,1–2 圈)② Head (the melody enters, 1–2 loops)

The most "stable" section of the whole song—you can hum the melody. Lay the foundation with your fallback loop, establish connection, and calibrate your stretch and frame. Quietly memorize the melody—it will come back at the end, and you'll want to recognize it when it does.

③ 独奏轮 Solos(每人 1–2 圈,全曲最长)③ Solos (1–2 loops each; the longest part of the song)

The musicians take turns improvising. The core principle: instrument = movement texture. Piano / guitar solos are light and fragmented → small moves, play with rhythm; saxophone → stretched, breathing quality, do the "dragged" version of your swingout; high trumpet → show off, bring in the turns; drum or bass solo → stop and give it space, play little games with your feet. Every time the instrument changes, you change texture—this one tip alone is enough to make you "look like you really understand the music."

④ 合奏高潮 Shout Chorus(常在最后 1–2 圈)④ Shout Chorus (usually in the last 1–2 loops)

全队齐奏 riff、鼓最凶、音量顶格——The whole band riffs in unison, the drums hit hardest, the volume maxes out—今晚的大招时刻。tonight's big-move moment. Back-to-back swingouts, consecutive turns + hops, everything you've been saving all night goes here. Spot the warning signs: riffs stacking up layer by layer, drums getting fuller and fuller.

Ending⑤ Ending

Two common ways to close: repeat the final phrase three times (a tag), or the whole band stops together on one note.你该做的:What you should do:最后一个 8 做收势,停在 pose 上,对视,笑。 Use the last 8 to wind down, stop in a pose, make eye contact, smile. Nailing the ending = the most memorable moment of the whole dance.

Three Components: Break · Riff · Call & Response

The band suddenly goes quiet together for 1–2 bars, leaving only one instrument or total emptiness. The warning sign is the end of a phrase suddenly tightening up, or a unison ascending line "holding its breath." Pick one of three responses:freeze 定格freeze慢动作slow motionfree spin 转完停住free spin and stop when it ends。 . It's fine if you miss it the first time—breaks in an arrangement almost always come around again, and the second time you must catch it.

The same short melodic phrase keeps coming back = a road sign. Every time the riff returns, return to your signature move, and the audience will understand the "call-back."

One instrument throws out a phrase, another answers. Copy it straight into your dance: you do something, then stop, and let the follow answer. That sense of conversation is the most precious thing in partner dancing.

The Energy Curve: How a Song Breathes 前奏Intro 主题Head 独奏轮(波浪起伏)Solos (rising and falling waves) Shout Wind down

Energy doesn't rise in a straight line—it climbs in waves. Match your movement intensity to the curve:独奏轮里有起有伏,别一直输出;把最高点留给 shout chorus。 : there are peaks and dips within the solos, so don't stay at full output; save your highest point for the shout chorus. Only a leader who knows how to conserve energy gets a real climax.

Two Rules of Discipline + One Reset Button

One musical phrase (4 sets of 8) should advance only one idea. Finish one thing, then use the last two beats of the phrase to prepare the next. Trying to cram in too much only breeds chaos.

The three-step staircase of ear training:① 稳住脚下 pulse 跟拍 → ② 数 8、感觉 4 个 8 一句 → ③ 预判句尾和 break。 ① Lock in the pulse under your feet and stay on the beat → ② Count the 8s and feel 4 sets of 8 as one phrase → ③ Anticipate phrase endings and breaks. In social dancing, reaching ② already makes you plenty musical.

出错重启键:The mistake-reset button:任何混乱 →Any chaos → rock step = Ctrl+Z → 回万能 groove 循环 → 下个乐句重新出发。 = Ctrl+Z → return to the all-purpose groove loop → set off fresh at the next phrase. No one saw your mistake — only you know it happened.

03 · Default Loops

Fallback loops for when you blank on moves: autopilot for an empty mind

Every leader needs a few "muscle-memory loops" — a bit more variety and fun than the basic, something you can run mindlessly when you forget your moves; keep running them and the inspiration comes back. There's one for each tempo range, all already weighted toward bounce and turns to suit your taste.

Each move is 6 beats; the rock step is always the reset button — if you forget, go back to square one. Release the inside turn into a free spin (give a full prep one beat ahead). Swap the triple step for a light hop-step, landing on the musical accents.

The circle comes with its own centrifugal swing feel — add pulse and eye contact, and that's musicality. On the last 2 beats of the circle, finish with a little hop of your own; at beat 4 of the swingout, give the follow a free turn.

① Count the 8s out loud through an entire song; ② slap your thigh at the end of every phrase; ③ break prophet — call out "stop" one beat ahead. Pick any track from this playlist; starting with #13 or #23 is easiest.

Listen to each song three times — first pass, purely counting 8s; second pass, raise your hand at the end of each phrase; third pass, lie down and dance it in your head (really — lying down counts as dance practice too). Finish the whole playlist in five weeks and your understanding of the music will surpass half the veteran dancers.
