文学终局加开朗读关:美文不只是读懂的,是读出声才算拥有的。 ▸ 操作:每周选一页 Salter 或 CMBYN,先听有声书版一遍,再用 speak 长文朗读整页录音对比:连读、弱读、意群断句三项自查。Greenwell 的长句是朗读换气的期末考。
阶段意义到这里,"学英语"结束,"拥有英语"开始——你在用英语获得只有英语能给的东西。

Hitch the strongest bait to the most honest muscle

Same doctrine as the Chinese edition, direction reversed: learn Mandarin through romance and desire-driven narrative. When input is compelling enough that you forget it's a foreign language, acquisition takes care of itself. PREFACE

Four asymmetries — why this ladder differs from the English one

The mechanisms are identical (compelling input, arousal-enhanced memory, genre fiction as a natural graded reader). But Chinese bends the ladder in four places, and the plan bends with it.

The hanzi wall listening enters before reading

Characters tax reading early. So Phase 1 here is video-first (dramas with dual subtitles), where the English edition is text-first. Reading catches up in Phase 2 via comics and short novels.

Tones make shadowing mandatory prosody = meaning

In English, shadowing polishes you. In Mandarin, tone is lexical — get it wrong and you said a different word. freem speak is promoted from enhancement to core curriculum.

There is no audio-erotica platform for Mandarin; the closest supply is voiced otome games and 广播剧 audio dramas. Explicit fiction lives offshore in legal gray zones; the story-quality layer (Jinjiang) is sanitized. This ladder runs on romantic tension more than explicitness — the aftertaste principle survives the translation.

RULES

Five rules of engagement — break one and the bait stops working

Three-strikes lookup, ledger in notebook

Look a word up only when it appears a third time and blocks comprehension. Drop it into a freem notebook ledger — no Anki, no handwriting drills. Recognition first; production comes free later. Sundays, let notebook cluster the week's words and spin them into one gossipy paragraph for review.

Subtitle ladder, then wean

Phase 1: dual subs (EN + ZH). Phase 2: Chinese subs only. Phase 3: subs as fallback. Pinyin is training wheels — off the bike by Phase 2 except for lookups.

Ride one IP at a time

Vocabulary recurrence is compound interest: novel → drama → audio drama of the same story recycles the exact word set at rising difficulty. Switching IPs flushes the cache.

Grammar-model firewall

Webnovel prose contains real nonstandard usage; it's your volume gym, not your style guide. Model your output on edited prose (Gu Man's novels, Wang Xiaobo later). Same law for freem translate: paragraph-level checks on stuck passages and reverse-checking your own writing only — never read with live translation on.

Register firewall

Sweet-drama pillow talk (撒娇 register) does not belong in business WeChat. You'll remember this rule because forgetting it is hilarious exactly once.

GATERead one Gu Man chapter without pinyin; retell it to live-chat for 3 minutes.

Wang Xiaobo 王小波《黄金时代》 first — the atlas's Chinese-literature flagship, and his prose is famously plain and colloquial; desire under real repression, both leads full subjects. Then Eileen Chang 张爱玲《色,戒》 (dense short story — pair with Ang Lee's film, the book↔film move at literary altitude). Final boss: 《金瓶梅》 — with the vernacular warning: it's written in Ming-dynasty baihua. That's not your Chinese failing; that's four centuries of language change. Use an annotated edition. The Lawrence-dialect mirror, at scale.

Jinjiang 晋江文学城 is the volume gym — the largest romance UGC platform, sanitized by regulation (the atlas's structural note applies: story-quality lives here, explicitness lives offshore in legal gray zones this guide won't route you to). Adjust 浓度 expectations; the tension is real even when the page fades to black. Avoid xianxia webnovels early — immortal-cultivation jargon is a vocabulary tax you don't owe yet.
