The original plan was a full 10 seasons, championed by Martin himself; but over the course of production, Martin was gradually shut out by 2DB. The real turning point was 2DB landing a ticket to a Star Wars trilogy — from that moment on, all they wanted was to wrap up Thrones as quickly as possible. HBO had no good way to resolve the structural problem that "the project was run by 2DB," and could only hold its nose and let them shrink Seasons 7 and 8 while remaining in charge.

Compounded by Season 3's critical collapse and Season 4's ratings avalanche, HBO executed the show outright. The promised final season will never exist, and the series was at one point even pulled from streaming platforms. Four seasons of "awakening narrative," and in the end it never managed to wake up itself.
