The Brand Age

How Swiss watches survived by becoming brands, not instruments

01

Concise Summary

The Swiss watch industry's near-collapse in the 1970s wasn't caused by one factor but three coinciding disasters: Japanese competition, currency revaluation, and quartz movements.

Quartz was the decisive blow because it made precision — the industry's entire value proposition — into a cheap commodity overnight.

Three simultaneous shocks

Japanese competition (1968 Geneva Observatory sweep), the collapse of Bretton Woods (Swiss franc nearly tripling in dollar terms by 1978), and the quartz movement together destroyed the old basis of Swiss competitiveness — precision — almost overnight.

📉

Commoditization of precision

Quartz made accurate timekeeping cheap and universal, so the exact attribute that once justified high prices — being the most precise instrument available — stopped being scarce, wiping out the industry's original value proposition.

💎

Pivot from instrument to luxury

The handful of Swiss brands that survived did so by redefining what an expensive watch buys: not superior function anymore, but status, craftsmanship narrative, and brand identity — a wholesale reinvention of the product category.

🎨

Design serving brand, not performance

Once function stops differentiating products, design decisions get made to reinforce brand signaling — a shift Graham frames as a general pattern, not one unique to watches, that recurs whenever technology equalizes underlying performance.

The argument, step by step
1
Set-up: through the 1960s Swiss watchmakers dominated on precision, viewing Japan as a slower follower.
2
First shock: 1968 Geneva Observatory trials show Japan can now build watches that are both cheaper and more accurate.
3
Second shock: Bretton Woods collapses in 1973, and the Swiss franc's dollar value nearly triples by 1978, tripling effective prices for American buyers.
4
Third and decisive shock: the quartz movement turns precision — the industry's core selling point — into a cheap commodity, invalidating the entire competitive logic.
5
Consequence: Swiss watch sales fall by roughly two-thirds within a decade; most manufacturers go bankrupt or are absorbed.
6
Resolution: the few survivors reinvent themselves as luxury brands, selling status and narrative instead of instrument performance — Graham's launching point for a broader claim about brand replacing substance once technology commoditizes it.

Detailed Summary

Graham opens by insisting the 'quartz crisis' label is misleading: it flattens three distinct, independently sufficient disasters into one. Japanese manufacturers had been closing the cost gap throughout the 1960s, but the 1968 Geneva Observatory trials — the era's most authoritative precision competition — delivered a psychological blow: Japan swept the top mechanical honors, meaning the gap wasn't just cost anymore, it was quality too.

The second, purely macroeconomic shock came from currency, not craftsmanship. Bretton Woods had artificially pegged the franc at 0.228 to the dollar since 1945; its 1973 collapse let the franc float upward, reaching 0.625 by 1978 — nearly tripling the dollar price of Swiss watches through exchange rates alone, independent of anything happening inside a workshop.

Graham frames quartz as the true 'last straw' precisely because it attacked the industry's foundation rather than its margins: competition and currency could shrink profits, but quartz eliminated the scarcity of the thing being sold. Accurate timekeeping, once an expensive achievement, became a commodity available in any cheap watch — collapsing the premise that mechanical precision justified premium pricing.

The scale of the fallout — roughly two-thirds of sales volume gone within a decade, most manufacturers bankrupt or absorbed — sets up the piece's real subject: not the crisis itself but the handful of firms that escaped it, and how they did so.

Graham's pivot is that survival required redefining the product category itself: in 1960 an expensive watch was expensive because it cost more to make and delivered superior precision. After the crisis, expensive watches remained expensive, but the justification shifted entirely to brand — status signaling, craft narrative, heritage — decoupled from any measurable performance advantage.

The excerpt ends mid-argument, but the trajectory is clear: Graham is using this as a case study for a general claim (evidenced by the collection title 'The Brand Age') that whenever technology equalizes real product performance, brand — and design in service of brand — becomes the primary axis of competition, a dynamic he likely extends beyond watches to other industries.

Was the quartz crisis really just about quartz movements?'

No — Graham argues it bundles three independent disasters: Japanese quality gains, Swiss franc revaluation after Bretton Woods collapsed, and quartz. Any one alone would have hurt; together they were catastrophic.

Why couldn't Swiss makers just build their own quartz watches to compete?

The excerpt doesn't cover this directly, but the underlying issue is that quartz erased the scarcity quartz was built on — precision — so competing on quartz meant competing on price in a commodity market Swiss cost structures weren't built for.

Is this just a story about watches, or does Graham mean something broader?

Broader — the collection title 'The Brand Age' signals Graham is using Swiss watchmaking as a case study for a general pattern: whenever technology commoditizes real performance differences, brand takes over as the dominant competitive lever.

How exactly did the Swiss franc's rise hurt watchmakers?

Bretton Woods had pegged the franc artificially low against the dollar since 1945. Its 1973 collapse let the franc float up to 0.625 by 1978, nearly tripling the dollar cost of Swiss watches for American buyers — pure currency effect, unrelated to manufacturing.

Did all Swiss watchmakers survive by going luxury?

No — Graham is explicit that only a small handful of independent brands survived this way; most manufacturers went bankrupt or were absorbed by others during the roughly two-thirds sales collapse.

In-depth Analysis · Pros & Cons

Paul Graham uses the collapse and rebirth of the Swiss watch industry to argue that once technology erases real performance differences between products, brand becomes the dominant force — and design itself starts bending to serve branding rather than function.

Paul Graham

Strengths
  • Untangles a conflated narrative
Graham's core contribution is separating the 'quartz crisis' into three distinct causal factors, which sharpens the analysis considerably compared to the common single-cause telling.
  • Concrete, checkable historical detail
Specific dates, exchange rates, and the Geneva Observatory trials give the argument evidentiary weight rather than relying on vague industry lore.
  • Clean mechanism for the brand pivot
The 1960-vs-post-crisis contrast (cost/precision → status/narrative) is a crisp, transferable model of how commoditization forces a category redefinition.
  • Sets up a bigger thesis efficiently
By the end of this excerpt the specific watch history has already been positioned as a case for a general claim about brand replacing substance — an efficient scaffold for the rest of the essay.
Limits & Critiques
  • Excerpt cuts off mid-argument
The available text stops right as Graham pivots to the brand thesis, so the essay's central claim about design bending to brand is asserted by title alone, not yet argued or evidenced here.
  • Single-industry base for a universal claim
Watches are a distinctive case — small, symbolic, worn objects — and Graham hasn't yet shown (in this excerpt) that the same brand-over-substance dynamic generalizes cleanly to industries with different purchase logic, like software or industrial goods.
  • No counter-examples considered
The piece doesn't address watch brands or categories where genuine performance differentiation persisted despite commoditizing technology (e.g. dive watches, chronometers for aviation), which would complicate a clean brand-takes-over narrative.
  • Precise figures presented without sourcing shown here
Numbers like the exact 1978 exchange rate and the two-thirds sales drop are stated with footnote markers, but the footnotes themselves aren't visible in this excerpt, leaving verification to the reader.
Bottom line
总评

Read this for a sharp, evidence-grounded correction to the standard 'quartz crisis' story and a clean model of how commoditization forces a pivot from substance to brand. But treat it as the opening act of a larger essay: the excerpt stops before Graham defends his broader claim about design bending to brand, and the single-industry evidence base means the universal thesis still needs testing elsewhere.

The Brand Age

March 2026 In the early 1970s, disaster struck the Swiss watch industry. Now people call it the quartz crisis, but in fact it was a compound of three separate disasters that all happened at about the same time. The first was competition from Japan. The Swiss had been watching the Japanese in the rear view mirror all through the 1960s, and they'd been improving at an alarming rate. But even so the Swiss were surprised in 1968 when the Japanese swept all the top spots for mechanical watches at the Geneva Observatory trials. The Swiss knew what was coming. For years the Japanese had been able to make cheaper watches. Now they could make better ones too. To make matters worse, Swiss watches were about to become much more expensive.
